Newark FFA has Fall Mums for Sale

Newark FFA Participates in Scarecrow Festival

Newark FFA students are selling mums, gourds, pumpkins, broom corn, and Indian corn at the Meadowlands Scarecrow Fest in Newark on Saturday, October 2nd and Sunday, October 3rd (10 a.m.-4 p.m.) Newark FFA has been providing fall decorations for the community off and on for over 10 years. All proceeds go to the members of the FFA chapter to pay for leadership camp scholarships, state and national convention scholarships, and for program equipment and supplies. Joe Steffen, FFA instructor at Newark High School, is coordinating the student activities.Meadowlands Farm is located at 13890 County Line Road, Newark, IL. (10 miles from Rt. 47 & 71 intersection; 5 miles from Rt. 52 & 71 intersection).

State FFA Convention

The 2010 Illinois State FFA Convention was held on June 14-16. Illinois FFA members from all over the state met in Springfield. There they attended sessions, workshops, and toured the capitol. During sessions we listened to our 2009-2010 retiring officer’s addresses, learned about leadership, watched proficiency awards, and saw some awesome FFA Talent. The Seneca FFA Chapter was ranked number one in the state, while the Newark FFA Chapter came in second.
After sessions were over delegates met to talk about things they wanted to change or do to improve FFA. On Wednesday night they elected the 2010-2011 State Officers. Among them are John Edgar, President; Jake Ekstrand, Vice President; Morgan Ott, Reporter; Cody Gill, Secretary; Jeffrey Barnes, Treasurer.
State Convention was a lot of fun, and everyone is looking forward to going again next year. It was a chance to make new friends, learn about leadership, and make a lot of incredible memories.

Protect Livestock Farming Fundraiser

Saturday, September 28, FFA Members parked cars at the Protect Livestock Farming Fundraiser. It was held on Hollenback Road, at the Rosenwinkel’s farm. People who attended enjoyed a DJ, great food, and a silent auction. It was a great turnout, and approximately 300 people attended. The event was from 1-9pm, and each person who came paid $20 for a ticket, however children under 8 were free. While people danced, ate, and talked to each other, 50/50 raffle tickets were sold.
Many people donated money, time, and items to go in the silent auction. Everyone was very pleased with the turnout, and the night was a great success.

Vintage Baseball

This year, Newark celebrated it’s 175th birthday, and to honor that we had a week long Fourth of July celebration. Each night a different part of the community would do something, and Wednesday, June 29, was FFA Night. To start the night we had a steak dinner at Townhouse Park, followed by a vintage baseball game. FFA Alumni members, as well as FFA member’s parents participated in the baseball game. The opposing team was the Somonauk Blue Stockings.
As many people watched, they realized how different the rules are now. Players were not allowed to use gloves, and if they did anything offensive they were fined up to 25 cents. During the game, FFA Members sold Cracker Jacks, snow cones, and FFA apparel to spectators.
Vintage baseball is very different from the baseball we play today. The rules are different, and in many ways it’s harder. Even though the Newark team lost, they all had fun, and the fans cheered in encouragement. The night was full of laughing and cheering, and many of the townspeople came to eat or watch the game. It was a great success, and everyone is looking forward to another baseball game in the future.

Newark FFA Chapter Receives National Ranking

INDIANAPOLIS—The National FFA Organization recently selected from a pool of more than 650 candidates nationwide the Newark FFA Chapter, as a 3-star winner in the National FFA Chapter Award program. The chapter members have been invited to attend the 83rd National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Ind., Oct. 20-23, 2010, where they will be recognized for this honor.
The award program is sponsored by Ford Motor Company and John Deere as a special project of the National FFA Foundation. The National FFA Chapter Award program recognizes FFA chapters for developing and conducting a detailed Program of Activities (POA). Each activity provides opportunities for members to excel in one of three areas: student, chapter, or community development. Every year, chapters are recognized as having earned a one, two, or three-star rating on their application. The three-star rating is the highest level of accomplishment a chapter may achieve.
The National FFA Organization, formerly known as the Future Farmers of America, is a national youth organization of 520,284 student members – all preparing for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture – as part of 7,439 local FFA chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Newark FFA Chapter Earns Gold Emblem Designation

The Newark FFA Chapter was recognized with the National Chapter Gold Emblem Award on June 10 at the annual Illinois FFA Convention. The convention is held June 8-10 at the Prairie Capital Convention Center in Springfield.

The National Chapter Gold Emblem Award celebrates the top FFA Chapters in the country for their outstanding Program of Activities in the past year. The Gold Emblem is the highest rank a chapter can receive in the state.

More than 3,500 FFA members, advisors, parents, and guests participated in the 82nd Illinois FFA State Convention. There are 17,400 members in 301 different FFA chapters in the State of Illinois. The National FFA Organization is a national youth organization preparing students for leadership and careers in the science, business, and technology of agriculture.

The Newark FFA Chapter was recognized as the Section Winner of the Community Development Award on June 9 at the Illinois FFA Convention. The convention is being held June 8-10 at the Prairie Capital Convention Center in Springfield.

The Illinois Association FFA recognizes the chapter with the best Community Development Program in each of the association's 25 sections. Community development - along with student development and chapter development - make up the chapter's Program of Activities. Newark FFA Receives Cooperative Activities Award

The Newark FFA Chapter was recognized as the Section 7 Winner of the Cooperative Activities Award Program on June 9 at the Illinois FFA Convention. The convention is being held June 8-10 at the Prairie Capital Convention Center in Springfield.

The Cooperative Activities Award Program is designed to increase FFA members' understanding of the cooperative way of doing business. Members representing the winning FFA chapters will participate in the Cooperative Activities Tour in July. The tour provides FFA members the opportunity to gain firsthand insights with cooperatives and the leaders of agricultural cooperatives.

The Cooperative Activities program is sponsored are by the Illinois Farm Bureau, GROWMARK, COUNTRY Insurance and Financial Services, Prairie Farms Dairy, and IAA Credit Union. Jane Castellano, of GROWMARK, and Lauren Jaeger, of Prairie Farms, presented the awards.

The Newark FFA Chapter was recognized as the Section 7 Winner of the American Heritage Award Program on June 9 at the Illinois FFA Convention. The convention is being held June 8-10 at the Prairie Capital Convention Center in Springfield.

As sponsors of the Heritage Award, the Illinois Farm Bureau and affiliated companies recognize chapters with programs that promote citizenship in the chapter, school, and community. Members representing the winning FFA chapters participate in a tour of historical sites in and around the Washington D.C. area, including Arlington National Cemetery.

Rehberg Earns Top Ten Chapter President’s Award

Logan Rehberg, a member of the Newark FFA Chapter, was recognized as a Top Ten Chapter President in the State of Illinois on June 9 at the Illinois FFA Convention. The convention is being held June 8-10 at the Prairie Capital Convention Center in Springfield.

The Top Ten Chapter President’s award recognizes the outstanding performance of these elite local chapter presidents in the past year and is sponsored by the Illinois Farm Bureau and GROWMARK.

Newark FFA to have Final Greenhouse Sale This Spring

The Newark FFA will hold its final Greenhouse sale will be Saturday, May 22 from 8-11 am at the Newark FFA/Vulcan Greenhouse at Newark Community High School. Hanging Baskets will be on sale for $10 each or less, potted annuals and 3-pks are $1 each and flats will be $10. All items must go in order to close the greenhouse for the summer. Strawberry Status

The status of strawberry orders are that Florida had a cold spell last week which slowed development. I am to call next Monday and I should know more on the status of the strawberries. Sorry for the delay. Old Man Winter just won't let go and let Mother Nature take over. We can sell about 40 flats or more...

FFA Week

This past week the Newark FFA chapter celebrated with many other chapters around the U.S. the national FFA week. On Monday we had Green-hand day and chapter t-shirt day. We had the green-hands dye their hand green to show the rest that they were new members of the FFA and then some of the officers participated in sharing the FFA with the community by making ice cream with the 1st grade at Lisbon and the 2nd grade in Newark. On Tuesday we had tractor apparel day and pork burger lunch. We had a great turnout for the community and the school. The community had a chance to come and get their lunch before the school. It was great to have so many people help the FFA and enjoy their lunch. On Wednesday we had drive your tractor to school and boots and shorts day. On this day even the people that weren’t in FFA participated and had a good time with this day. It tried to show the school that you don’t have to be an FFA kid to have a good time with FFA week. Also on Wednesday the officers also went to the 8th grades in Millbrook and Lisbon. The let over pizza was then sold at lunch for the rest of the high schoolers. On Thursday the chapter then held a petting zoo. The community was also able to stop by the school along with grade school kids to see horses, calves, goats, pigs, and a lizard. Everyone that came seemed to have a great time looking and petting the animals. Since there was no school on Friday the FFA members had a movie night and game night which was a great wrap up for the great week. The purpose of FFA Week is to try and give back to the community and tell people what FFA is all about. During the week each of the officers shared a special FFA fact to share the FFA story. All together the week was very successful and I believe we helped share what FFA is and how agriculture is needed.

Proficiency Awards

Every year the members from chapters all over Illinois get recognized for their outstanding performances in their SAEs. There are several categories in which a member from a chapter may win. The Newark FFA had several chapter winners: Logan Rehberg for Star farmer, Beef Production, Diversified Livestock Production, and Fiber and/or Oil Crop Production; Kyle Testin for Star in Ag Placement, Outdoor Recreation, and Swine Production- Placement; Kendall Sigmund for Ag Mechanics Repair and Maintenance; Allie Hickernell for Ag Sales; Steve Nichols for Dairy Production and Diversified Crop Production; Derek Chandler for Diversified Ag Production; Cassidy Hamman for Equine Science- Entrepreneur; Samantha Hoddy for Equine Science- Placement; Rachel Whitlock for Floriculture; Connor Duncan for Grain Production; Alex Bromeland for Poultry Production; Britney Eichelberger for Small Animal Production and Care; Courtney Danneberg for Swine Production- Entrepreneur; Tara Bernard for Turf Grass Management. Out of the Chapter winners we had seven people win to go on to district. They were Logan Rehberg, Kyle Testin, Kendall Sigmund, Allie Hickernell, and Courtney Danneberg. Theses students have done a great job on their SAEs and have been awarded to move on to district. If they then win district they will then be able to go onto state. Congrats to all who won chapter and section.

Newark FFA Holds Strawberry Sale

If you had them last year, you know you want them this year. The Newark FFA chapter is holding a strawberry sale until February 24th. Strawberries will be sold by the flat, and a flat holds 12 pints (approx. 1 ½ gal). Cost of a flat is $21.00 each and pick-up will be the 1st or 2nd week in March due to availability and weather conditions in Florida. Illinois FFA Foundation Drive

The Newark FFA Members were planning to collect for the Illinois FFA Foundation the week of December 7th has been postponed until Monday December 21st due to Weather and other events here at Newark Community High School.
