The Newark FFA Horticulture team placed first in the Section 7 contest. The Horticulture Career Development Event consists of a written test and judging rings of horticulture and floriculture crops, a landscape practicum and floriculture practicum and landscape plant identification class.
Individuals from the Newark FFA that placed in the event include:
Dan Doeing placed first, Steve Nichols second, Skyler Hagen fourth, Ali Monkemeyer eighth, Kelsey Oldenberg twentieth, Andrea Peterson sixteenth, Sam Hoddy seventeenth.
Students are challenged with identifying over 150 horticulture and floriculture samples at the Horticulture CDE. They must also evaluate the landscape plants based on quality as well as the monetary value of the plants. Students also had to do a tree practicum and flower boutonniere practicum.
The Section 7 Horticulture CDE was held at Newark High School on April 22, 2009. FFA chapters participating were Minooka, Seneca, Mendota, Somonauk –Leland, and Streator Woodland
Students cover a horticulture science unit in Horticulture class. FFA members prepared for this event by attending before and after school practices. Plant material samples are donated by Winding Creek Nursery.
