The Newark FFA Horticulture team placed first in the Section 7 contest. The Horticulture Career Development Event consists of a written test and judging rings of horticulture and floriculture crops, a landscape practicum and floriculture practicum and landscape plant identification class.
Individuals from the Newark FFA that placed in the event include:
Dan Doeing placed first, Steve Nichols second, Skyler Hagen fourth, Ali Monkemeyer eighth, Kelsey Oldenberg twentieth, Andrea Peterson sixteenth, Sam Hoddy seventeenth.
Students are challenged with identifying over 150 horticulture and floriculture samples at the Horticulture CDE. They must also evaluate the landscape plants based on quality as well as the monetary value of the plants. Students also had to do a tree practicum and flower boutonniere practicum.
The Section 7 Horticulture CDE was held at Newark High School on April 22, 2009. FFA chapters participating were Minooka, Seneca, Mendota, Somonauk –Leland, and Streator Woodland
Students cover a horticulture science unit in Horticulture class. FFA members prepared for this event by attending before and after school practices. Plant material samples are donated by Winding Creek Nursery.

Newark FFA Greenhouse Annual Sale

The Newark FFA Ag Mechanics team placed 3rd in the Section 7 contest. The Ag Mechanics Career Development Event consists of 5 divisions: Welding, Carpentry, Surveying, Electrical, and Small Engines. Individuals from the Newark FFA that placed in the event include:

The Newark FFA Livestock team placed 4th in the Section 7 contest. The Livestock Career Development Event consists of 12 livestock judging classes, three breeding classes and three keep-cull classes. Additionally, the Livestock CDE is held in conjunction with the JJC Livestock CDE.
The Livestock and Dairy Judging Career Development Event is an activity that requires a variety of skills. Students evaluate the livestock based on the physical characteristics, as well as, the frame and muscling of the animals. The classes of animals include ranking four animals best desirable to least desirable, keep or cull classes, EPD reading, yield grading for market animals and production predictions for cows, heifers and bulls. Students evaluate the dairy animals based on milk production readings, pedigree chart reading, size, volume and bone mass of the animal, udder size and conformation, ease of walking and soundness on their feet and legs.

Alison Monkemeyer Wins District FFA Award
Newark High School Superintendent Pauline Berggren announces that Alison Loree Monkemeyer, Millbrook, a member of the Newark FFA Chapter of the Illinois Association of the FFA, was selected as District 2 FFA Award winner in Floriculture held Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at Joliet junior College. Alison is the daughter of Brian and Penny Monkemeyer from Millbrook. She was selected in a competition with 5 FFA members from District 2. District 2 is comprised of 5 agriculture sections in Northeast Illinois including 82 in 18 counties.
Winning the District 2 FFA Floriculture makes Alison eligible to compete in the State FFA Awards Contest at Urbana on April 4th, 2009. Steps to this award include Alison winning the chapter and Sectional FFA Floriculture Award. Other agriculture education and FFA honors won by Alison include receiving the Newark FFA Alumni Scholarship.

Spring Day at the Farm Set for May 17th
The Newark FFA is participating in "Spring Day at the Farm" by bringing a display to share with all who come to the day at the farm. The day runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the Kendall County 4-H is joining with FFA to showcase what both groups learn and do. The FFA members will be filling the buildings with farm animals just like was many years ago. The Dickson-Murst partners will be feeding the participants.
Even if you are participating at a display with your family, you are invited to participate in a Kendall Arts Guild Workshop. This will be held at Dickson-Murst Farm, 2250 Dickson Road, Montgomery from 12:30-3:00 p.m. This will take place during "Spring Day at the Farm" on Sunday, May 17, 2009.

Newark FFA Chapter Participates in the Section 7 Dairy Foods CDE
The Newark FFA participated in the Section 7 Dairy Foods Career Development Event held at Seneca High School on December 3rd. The team place third overall in the competition. The contest consists of a written test and rings of Identification of many kinds of cheese. Individuals from the Newark FFA Chapter include: Kelsey Oldenburg, Levi Jager, Rachel Whitlock, Josh McConnell, and Sam Hoddy. Sam Hoddy placed 10th high individual at the contest. Students are also challenged with identifying milk problems and real versus artificial samples of milk products at the Dairy Foods CDE.
Newark FFA Chapter Participates in the Section 7 Agronomy CDE
The Newark FFA participated in the Section 7 Agronomy Career Development Event held at Seneca High School on December 3rd. The team place third overall in the competition. The contest consists of a written test and judging rings of corn, soybeans, wheat, oats, hay and silage. Individuals from the Newark FFA Chapter include: Alex Bromeland, Logan Rehberg, Mike Larson, and Zeke Schmidt. Students are also challenged with identifying over 75 weed and crop samples at the Agronomy CDE. They must also evaluate the grain samples based on seed quality as well as livestock nutritional value of the hay and silage. Students cover a crop science unit in Ag Science and Agribusiness classes. FFA members prepared for this event by attending practices before and after school.
Newark FFA Chapter Participates in the Million Can Challenge
The Newark FFA chapter participated in the Million Can Challenge sponsored by the National FFA Alumni and the Toyota Corporation. FFA members collected canned and non-perishable food the months of November and December. Over 500 lbs of canned food and fresh fruit was donated to the Kendall County Food Pantry. The National FFA Alumni and Toyota have teamed up to raise awareness of the need for food for the needy is needed throughout the year not just at holiday time. The Chapter will collect food all year long and will be given to local food pantries.Newark FFA Chapter members attend the Parliamentary Procedure Career Development Event (CDE)
The Newark FFA Parliamentary Procedure team placed 3rd in the Section 7 contest.Individuals from the Newark FFA chapter that placed in the event include: Dan Doeing placed 2nd as the Chairman. Tara Bernard placed 2nd as the Secretary. Skyler Hagen, Alex Bromeland, Logan Rehberg and Morganne Friestad placed as a Floor Members.
The proper way to conduct a business meeting is the goal of the Parliamentary Procedure CDE. Members from each team representing each school must have an extensive knowledge of parliamentary Procedure, as they must conduct the meeting, while being challenged in their knowledge of Roberts Rules of Order. The secretary must keep accurate minutes of this session problems. The remaining members of the team are the floor members. Floor members make motions and follow the proceedings of discussion and other business which takes place in meetings. The floor members are to challenge each president with knowledge and skills. All contestants are judged on their individual Parliamentary knowledge, as well as their public speaking skills and power of expression.
The section 7 Parliamentary procedure CDE was held December 16th at Seneca High School.
These FFA members prepared for this event by learning Parliamentary Procedure in Introduction to Agriculture class and by practicing before and after school.

Newark FFA to Participate in Scarecrow Fest
Newark FFA students are selling mums, gourds, pumpkins, broom corn, and Indian corn at the Meadowlands Scarecrow Fest in Newark on Saturday, October 4th (9 a.m.-5 p.m.) and Sunday, October 5th (10 a.m.-4 p.m.) Newark FFA has been providing fall decorations for the community off and on for over 10 years. All proceeds go to the members of the FFA chapter to pay for leadership camp scholarships, state and national convention scholarships, and for program equipment and supplies. Joe Steffen, FFA instructor at Newark High School, is coordinating the student activities.

Local Student Hits the Right Note
Indianapolis- When the lights are dimmed and hush descends upon an audience of more than 54,000 at the nation’s largest annual student convention this October 22 through October 25, 2008, in Conseco Fieldhouse, Abby McCartney will share the spotlight in a musical performance that will inspire the crowd and provide memories to last a lifetime.
Abby McCartney of the Newark FFA Chapter has been selected to sing soprano in the National FFA Chorus. The student submitted an audition tape and was one of 94 young people selected nationwide to be a member of the prestigious group.
The choir will perform several times at the 81st National Convention, adding excitement and motivation tot eh sessions through their music. National FFA Chorus members were nominated by their state associations and were chosen from a pool of more than 150 applications. The young musicians arrive in Indianapolis three days before convention begins to rehearse.

Indianapolis- The National FFA organization recently selected from a pool of more than 600 candidates nationwide the Newark FFA Chapter of Newark, Illinois, as a 3-star winner in the National FFA Chapter Award program. The chapter members have been invited to attend the 81st National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, October 22-25, 2008, where they will be recognized for this honor.
The award is sponsored by Toyota as special project of the National FFA Foundation. The National FFA Chapter Award program recognizes FFA chapters for developing and conducting a detailed Program of Activities (POA). Each activity provides opportunities for members to excel in one of the three areas: student, chapter, or community development. The Newark FFA chapter was the state winner in student development at the Illinois FFA Convention last June. Every year, chapters are recognized as having earned a one-, two-, or three-star rating on their application. The three-star rating is the highest level of accomplishment a chapter may achieve.

Despite New State Alignments Newark FFA Chapter Remains One of Illinois Top Chapters
After a year of changes, the Newark FFA Chapter ranked second in state again this year, making the Newark FFA Chapter on e of the top FFA Chapters in the state. Newark has been 2nd in state nine out of the last 10 years right behind the Seneca FFA chapter. The Illinois FFA Association did realignment a year ago this week that moved the Newark FFA Chapter out of the Chicago area schools to a section of local area schools. Career Development Events and other FFA activities have now been against new schools in area. The new section 7 now consists of Oswego East, Newark, Minooka, Seneca, Somonauk-Leland, Streator, Streator-Woodland, LaSalle, Mendota, and Serena. Changes made in all 25 sections in the state due to the increase of Agricultural Programs and FFA Chapters in Illinois.
The Newark FFA Chapter attended the 80th Annual Illinois FFA Convention in Springfield, Illinois, held June 10th through the 12th.
The Newark FFA Chapter accepted the award for the sixth place chapter in Illinois for its Heritage and Cooperative Program. The chapter ranked Gold in the State and will send Allie Jurcak and Alison Monkemeyer to Washington D.C. on all expense paid trip, sponsored by the Illinois Farm Bureau.
The Newark FFA Chapter received second place plaque for its work in the Illinois FFA Foundation Collection Drive. The chapter received the $9,000 Club Award collecting over $9,000 for the Illinois FFA Foundation.
The Newark FFA Chapter was one of 25 chapters to receive the FFA Sweepstakes Award. This award given to FFA chapters who take part in the National Chapter Award, Illinois FFA Foundation Collection Drive, Heritage Activity Program, and the Cooperative Activity Program and attends at least one State Career Development Event. The chapter also received the Century Challenge award, which recognizes the chapters that have achieved FFA membership equal to the agricultural education enrollment in the school. This is the chapters 28th consecutive year in this award.
The Newark FFA Chapter was section winner in the following area of Student Development in the National Chapter Award Program. There are three areas of the National Chapter Award Program and they are Chapter Development, Student Development, and Community Development. The Chapter was award the number chapter in the state in Student Development. This was the first time that Seneca FFA Chapter lost in this area. The Newark Chapter is a national finalist in the National Chapter Award Program, and judged in Indianapolis, IN this month and results given at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, IN, in October.
Abby McCartney sang a solo with the State FFA Chorus and chosen to represent Illinois at the National FFA Chorus at the National FFA Convention in October.
Also recognized was Hailey Rehberg for a gold rating and raked as the Top Ten Chapter FFA Presidents in Illinois.
Joe Hanson received his State FFA Degree, the highest degree the state association can bestow on its members.
Voting delegates attending the convention were Dan Doeing and Mike Larson. Also attending the convention was Zeke Schmidt, Josh Michealson, Alison Monkemeyer, Tara Bernard, Skyler Hagen, Sam Hoddy, Rachel Whitlock, Kendall Sigmund, Derek Chandler, Josh McConnell, Connor Duncan, Megan Watson, Logan Rehberg, Alex Bromeland, Luke Larson, Joe Hanson, Allie Jurcak, and Advisor of the Newark FFA Chapter Joe Steffen. The Newark FFA Chapter would like to thank Wendy Bernard and Darlene Ashton for the chaperoning the convention.Overall, the Newark FFA Chapter received a gold rating and recognized as the second place chapter in the state of Illinois. The chapter will compete nationally this summer along with 30 other schools from Illinois.

This is the chapters 28th consecutive year in this award.
The Newark FFA Chapter was section winner in the following area of Student Development in the National Chapter Award Program. There are three areas of the National Chapter Award Program and they are Chapter Development, Student Development, and Community Development. The Chapter was award the number chapter in the state in Student Development. This was the first time that Seneca FFA Chapter lost in this area. The Newark Chapter is a national finalist in the National Chapter Award Program, and judged in Indianapolis, IN this month and results given at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, IN, in October.
Abby McCartney sang a solo with the State FFA Chorus and chosen to represent Illinois at the National FFA Chorus at the National FFA Convention in October.
Also recognized was Hailey Rehberg for a gold rating and raked as the Top Ten Chapter FFA Presidents in Illinois.
Joe Hanson received his State FFA Degree, the highest degree the state association can bestow on its members.
Voting delegates attending the convention were Dan Doeing and Mike Larson. Also attending the convention was Zeke Schmidt, Josh Michealson, Alison Monkemeyer, Tara Bernard, Skyler Hagen, Sam Hoddy, Rachel Whitlock, Kendall Sigmund, Derek Chandler, Josh McConnell, Connor Duncan, Megan Watson, Logan Rehberg, Alex Bromeland, Luke Larson, Joe Hanson, Allie Jurcak, and Advisor of the Newark FFA Chapter Joe Steffen. The Newark FFA Chapter would like to thank Wendy Bernard and Darlene Ashton for the chaperoning the convention.Overall, the Newark FFA Chapter received a gold rating and recognized as the second place chapter in the state of Illinois. The chapter will compete nationally this summer along with 30 other schools from Illinois.
Newark FFA Members Feed Drivers from Heritage Trail Tractor Drive
On Monday June 16th about three hundred tractors drove into Newark. Over half drove on through town under the big American Flag hanging from the Newark Fire Department Ladder Truck while the rest stopped at the Newark Community Park for a porkchop lunch provided by the Newark FFA Chapter. Tractors from 13 states took a rest from driving from Morris before driving to Ottawa during the Heritage Trail driving trek.
Newark FFA receives Illinois State Board Education Grant
The Newark FFA received a $958 grant to purchase three mAGic Kits. The kits are designed 3rd-5th graders different areas in Agriculture with fun learning activities while learning the required state standards for the state of Illinois. The goal is the teach grade students at Lisbon and Newark grade school in the 2008-2009 school year. Purchased were a Dairy, Soil, Machinery, and Chick mAGic kits. Kendall County Ag in the Classroom Coordinator, Jenny Wold will teach Newark FFA members to teach these units to the grade students
